yesterday we all drove down to grandma's to deliver robert (left) for a week of skimboard camp. he's been skimming since he was about 5 and just loves it. a friend came by during the spring and mentioned that his cousin was a campion skimboarder and had a camp in the summer that robert would probably love. my mother-in-law lives very near to where it's held and said she'd love to have him for the week. i was thrilled that he wanted to do it not only because it would give him something to do but also because he was comfortable staying away from me for more than just a night or two with grandma.
as a coincidence, a couple of his friends were staying down at a nearby beach with one of their moms who is a very good friend of mine. we met up and had a wonderful day at the beach. that is once we got settled. i'm afraid it was a bit of driving for her on crowded pacific coast highway but i think she had a nice day with us. after spending some time relaxing on the beach talking and then going for a very exciting walk where we got soaked by the surf at high tide we went up to grandma's house. had our favorite mexican take-out and sat around the patio chatting. the boys were inside just hanging out talking. it was good to hear all their laughter.
while the boys spent their day skimboarding, kaitlin, allison and their cousin, daniel, spent the day swimming and playing in the sand together. katlin and daniel had blast burrying allison in the sand. daniel and kaitlin are the same age and both the girls get on well with him. one of the things that i love about having had the type of access to the beach that we've had due to grandma living so close to the beach is that the kids are very comfortable swimming in the ocean. much more so than i ever was. i love seeing them swimming in the surf and just diving under the waves just at the right time so the don't wipe out.
allison was in heaven being burried. they didn't get a speck of sand on her face. really amazing considering all the sand that the got around her neck and shoulders.
i finished kaitlin's socks but still have to take a photo of them. i'll get them on her feet today and post them soon
